7. Joan Jett & the Blackhearts – I Love Rock ‘N Roll

Originally written by Alan Merrill and first recorded by the group in 1975, the Arrows. Joan Jett & the Blackhearts made the song famous in 1982 with their own cover version. Joan Jett’s rendition was her highest-charting hit peaking at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and the No. 3 song for 1982.

 

6. Peter Gabriel – Shock The Monkey

Written by Peter Gabriel as the second single from his solo fourth self-titled album. It peaked at number 29 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart and became number one on the Billboard Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks chart. 

 

5. Toto – Africa

Originally recorded in 1981 for their fourth studio album Toto IV and was released as the third single in 1982. It was written by the group members David Paich and Jeff Porcaro. The song became number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart and Toto’s only Billboard number one song.

The opening track from the band’s 1982 album Mirage. Lindsey Buckingham produced their thirteenth studio album with Richard Dashut and Ken Caillat. Christine McVie posed as the lead singer of the band after Stevie Nicks’s departure.

The hit single from the group’s album Signals. The song became a number one hit in Canada and remained for two weeks on the RPM national singles chart. The song also peaked at No. 42 in the UK.

 

2. The Pretenders – Back on the Chain Gang

Originally written by Chrissie Hynde and recorded by The Pretenders in 1982 which is also her band. The track was released as a single by Sire Records. The song peaked at the  Billboard charts in early October 1982 and reached number five on the Hot 100.
