David Gilmour’s 10 Favorite Guitarists

When Pink Floyd’s mysterious guitarist David Gilmour was voted the most prominent Fender guitar player of all time a few years ago, beating out Eric Clapton and Jimi Hendrix, he replied with a twisted sense of a rock star who has done it all since:

“Best ever Fender player will come around again, and it will be Eric or Jimi or someone. You can’t believe that stuff. Much as I’d love to believe I’m the best ever Fender guitar player, it just doesn’t really make sense.”

David Gilmour released his first solo album while still a member of Pink Floyd, in 1978. In this way, the musician wanted to relieve the stress of not the best situation in the band and record an album for pleasure, with total ease, without any pressure.

“When you start out, you copy,” Gilmour told Uncut, confirming that while his sound is unique his influences run deep. “Trying to be too original when you’re too young is possibly not the best thing. But I learned copying Pete Seeger, Lead Belly, Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix. All sorts of people.”

In the world of guitars, there is a special podium for the passion and virtuosity of Jimi Hendrix. Similarly, among the most legendary guitarists, we find David Gilmour. David Gilmour was Jimi Hendrix’s guitar technician at one time, he mixed the sound live to the Hendrix sound during the Isle of Wight Festival in late August 1970. Unfortunately, David remembers that he did not interact directly with Hendrix. He also states that he already knew him before and was a great admirer of his style. Undoubtedly, it was a historic day because it was one of the last performances of Jimi, who died a few weeks later, on September 18 of that same year in London.
