This Could Be Problematic…
The upcoming Freddie Mercury biopic ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ has truly been the talk of the town for the better part of 2018. As we can tell by the teasers and trailers that have been released thus far, Rami Malek, who portrays Freddie Mercury, seems to be the perfect fit for this role and already getting Oscar Nod buzz, as they say.
Every teaser, every trailer and every clip of the film that’s been released thus far has been extraordinary and none have failed to give us goosebumps, but in one of the most recent teasers, we noticed something… off. To be perfectly honest, we didn’t notice it at first, but now that we see it, not only is it glaring, but it’s got us worried…. REALLY worried.
Do me a favor, check out this short clip that 20th Century Fox just released…
Notice anything? If you didn’t, don’t beat yourself up, it took us a while, too.
Here’s the mistake. This scene shows Queen in the creative process of writing their hit song “We Will Rock You”, a song which was released in 1977.
Now, take a look at Freddie Mercury. Here he is donning his iconic short hair/mustache look.
The problem is, in real life, Freddie didn’t have this look until 1980. So, why is that such a big deal? Well, normally it wouldn’t be, but you must know that in a biopic, especially a music-based biopic, the timeline and accuracy are EVERYTHING, and Freddie’s iconic looks are arguably the easiest way to identify each different era of Queen.
Here is what Freddie Mercury looked like in 1977…
So, this all begs the question, if something like this can go unnoticed in post-production, how will this affect the movie’s timeline as a whole. Do you think that this is a sign that the movie has the band’s timeline completely out of order? Is it possible that this one little error puts the film’s entire continuity out of wack?
Do you think it’s a forgivable mistake? Or do you think that this could all end up disastrous for the film? I guess we’ll have to wait and see when the movie comes out in two weeks…
