Prince’s second and self-titled album doesn’t get considered much when addressing the Kid’s discography, but it’s the first Prince record that seems timeless to this era. It begins with “I Wanna Be Your Lover”, a blithe track that drives the whole of For You (Prince’s debut album) out of the ocean.

Despite the debut record signifying a total commercial failure, Prince immediately followed up with a successor delivering his self-titled second album in October 1979, and one more time essentially every single quality of the record was controlled by Prince himself including the songwriting, production, arrangements, and musical accomplishments.

The cover of the album is slightly graphic. And, without a doubt, some of us can still remember that we were embarrassed to buy it. Even later, the album was ordinarily a little further behind in our music storage. But the sound? Prince proceeds to warm up. The voice was pretty promising.

The glossy jazzy funk of ‘I Wanna Be Your Lover’, finished with an extended vamp, sets the tone.

The track that kicks off the record became Prince’s first No. 1 R&B smash. Below is a rare 1981 live performance of “I Wanna Be Your Lover” by Prince. Watch the classic funky sizzling Prince doing everything on the stage!
