Eric Clapton’s appearance on “The Old Grey Whistle Test” from 1977 BBC TV Special was the time when he still had some problems with substances.
Of course, this had no insignificant effect on his musical abilities. At first, he limited himself to vocals and rhythm guitar, then he even left the stage completely for a piece. Only after his return, there are a few solos, which are rather average. The video below is still indispensable for fans since there is hardly any other video material from this period.
The full performance was filmed at BBC Studios in Shepherds Bush, London on 26 April 1977. Eric Clapton took the stage with his band at the time, featuring George Terry (Guitar), Dicks Sims (Keyboards), Carl Radle (Bass), Jamie Oldaker (Drums), Sergio Pastora Rodriguez (Percussion), Yvonne Elliman (Backing Vocals) and Marcy Levy (Backing Vocals).
