Who’s This Bass Playing Granny With The Weird Hairdo? – It’s The Great Gene Simmons!
82-Year-Old Carol Kaye is the most legendary bass player in the world of bass guitar. She was a member of LA’s legendary “Wrecking Crew” and one of the most creative and widely known bassists, playing over 10,0000 sessions in all of her 56-year career.
Kaye’s works can be heard on several productions by Phil Spector and Brian Wilson; she is also known and credited with the bass tracks on several hit records of Simon & Garfunkel. She has also played for Ritchie Valens’ “La Bamba.”
In the video, Kaye can be seen “SCHOOLING” Gene Simmons of KISS an impromptu bass lesson at the Sunset Sound Studios in Hollywood. That is something we never thought we’d see.
“No, no, no, you’ve got to do it with the beat, though, Gene,” telling Simmons. “No, no, up, down, up, down, up, down, up … .”
The video clip was actually an outtake for a documentary called “Sample This” in 2012. She was showing him off a few licks, but Simmons pointed out that he wants to learn a particular passage, so Kaye obliged.
“I’m teaching him how to play bass… isn’t that funny?” she laughs.
Seeing these two, the sad thing about it is that Gene Simmons got where he is by being a “ROCKSTAR” and not as a “BASS PLAYER.” It’s also a surprise that he never looked at the camera and played some KISS tunes knowing that he can be annoying sometimes but not on this, you can actually see him “WILLINGLY” do whatever Carol Kaye says. Despite Gene Simmons success and years as a rock star, he truly is humbled and trying to improve himself with legendary Carol Kaye’s lessons. Good musicians are always willing to learn no matter how big they are.
